Sweet and funny. . . contains all of the essential information adults need to help them get their kids ready for the big day. Written in a way that is completely accessible and entertaining for kids, by two nurses with decades of experience who’ve helped countless families.
Because of this book, “Calm & Prepared” is how my ten year old son, Trey, said he felt before his surgery. He really liked the characters’ names….he came out of anesthesia feeling very weird but he understood why. Thank you for a sweet, intelligent, helpful book!
“I don’t know why it’s taken this long, but I love this…! Now we have a book that is fun, silly, and completely accurate as it takes our kids through the preop, surgery and postop process. This book… walks you along, teaching and comforting as you learn.”
This book is a fantastic tool for any child receiving surgery…. It prepares parents and children for their surgery day with informative tidbits and a friendly approach. I would recommend this book to any parent and child going through the surgery experience.
Introducing Tollie McStretch
Hi there! My name is Tollie McStretch and this book is all about me!
A while back, I was playing basketball at school and tried to slam dunk. Well, it didn’t work out so good. I ended up breaking my arm and needed surgery to fix it. I never had surgery before and neither did any of my friends. I was kind of scared. What would it be like? I had to go to the hospital so a surgeon could fix my arm. By the end of my surgery day my arm was fixed and I learned a bunch of new things and met a lot of helpful animals.
That’s when I decided it was my job to tell other kids, like you some of the things that might happen at the hospital. To see all of this and more check out my book “Surgery Day!”

Preparing Your Child for Surgery
Imagine receiving the unexpected news that your child needs to have surgery! You research how to best prepare your whole family for what is to come. After searching the internet and the library, you realize there isn’t a book that is both kid- and parent-friendly to help everyone know what to expect on the day of surgery.
As mothers and nurses, we have experienced surgery on both ends. When our own children needed surgery, we felt unprepared and unknowledgeable as to what the surgery day would be like. Now working as perioperative nurses, we take care of families in the same situation–most arrive as we did, uncertain and underprepared. We wanted to change that and that’s why we wrote “Surgery Day“.
We felt strongly that a book was needed to explain to parents and their children, in a fun and engaging way, what’s going to happen on the day of surgery. While surgery centers, doctors, and nurses may differ slightly, this book gives an overview of what to expect. It fills in some of the unknowns, and it may help you come up with some questions to ask before your child’s surgery.
We hope you enjoy the book and find it helpful. Let us introduce you to Tollie, a ten-year old giraffe, whose job is to make your child’s Surgery Day a little less scary!
Why We Wrote The Book
We wrote Surgery Day, first in a series, to help kids and their parents know some of the things to expect when going to the hospital for surgery. Stay tuned to see how Tollie and all the citizens of Cando Town handle some of the things that life throws their way.
