And Off we go
Over spring break my kids and I had the opportunity to go on vacation with Julie and her sister. Julie, my kids and myself flew into Phoenix. When we landed at the airport, Julie’s sister, Kathy picked us up in her pickup truck and we drove to Puerto Penasco, Mexico. Myself and my kids had an experience of a lifetime. Let me tell you why!
Puerto Fronterizo, Mexican Border
We drove in the pickup truck and crossed the Mexican/American border. While you wait in line to enter Mexico there is a lottery system of what car will be searched. We happened to be one of the lucky ones that was picked. Upon entering Mexico a canine jumped into the bed of the truck sniffing for drugs and Kathy who is fluent in Spanish, was asked several questions by the Mexican Police as to why we were entering Mexico.
Steps of Love -Homework Club
We came to Mexico because Kathy runs a non-for-profit called Steps of love. http://stepsoflove.org/. In a nutshell Kathy is running multiple homework clubs in Puerto Penasco. She is helping hundreds of children who don’t have the opportunity to go to school, eat healthy meals and have a safe place to go during the school day. As many of these children live on the streets, literally.
Kathy is making a HUGE impact on these children. They adore her and refer to her as “Tia Katy.” These children that literally have nothing are so happy when Katy is around them. They truly light up!
For instance, when we arrived to town Kathy picked up one little girl who ended up staying with us for a couple of days. She wouldn’t leave Kathy’s side, as she adored Katy. A few other kids came to visit Katy at her house, and they too did not want to leave. Another teenage girl stayed with us on the later part of the trip, and she too did not want to leave. All because of the love and attention Kathy gives to these children.
I sincerely encourage you to check out the steps of love site and see the incredible work Kathy is doing!
Thank you Kathy and Julie for this once in a lifetime experience!
