This week our guest in The 2RNs Who’s Who in the Hospital series is a perioperative ward clerk.  She is well respected and is described by many as the rock or foundation of the unit.  She does it all!  Answering the never ending phone calls, multitasking, such as scanning documents, answering doctors, nurses, ancillary staff and patients questions. Her job is not easy, yet she makes it seem that way.

Find out how many phone calls she answers in a busy shift, a patient that she will never forget and much more.

Let us introduce you to an incredible colleague who wears many hats:

*1) First of all, how did you become a ward clerk?  “I honestly did not know what the job even meant.  I applied for the position, didn’t think I was going to get it, but I did.”

*2) Is there something that you do to connect with your patients? “I listen.”

*3) In general what is a complaint you have about the people you work with?  “There is too much co-dependency.”

*4) Do you have a patient or case that touched you the most? “I connected with a patient who had only been in this country for 3 weeks.  He only spoke Spanish and was in an isolation room.  None of my co-workers could speak Spanish except for me.  He was not allowed to have visitors.  He did not want to eat the food as he wasn’t familiar with it so I would bring him food.”

*5) What is one thing that you still have on your bucket list?  “I want to go to Paris with my oldest son.”

*6) If you couldn’t be a ward clerk what would you want to be?  “I could see myself doing something with arts and crafts.”

Part II:  Specific Questions for a ward clerk

1) What is the hardest part of your job?  “The multitasking and the constant ringing of the phones.”

2)  If you were to guess how many phone calls do you answer during your shift?  “Over 100 calls a day.”

3) Describe your job in 3 words?  Busy, interesting, changing
