Many of you may not know me. I am Tollie McStretch, “Surgery Day” Expert. Now, you may ask, “Surgery Day” Expert? How is that possible?
Let me tell you what happened: I love playing basketball and ’cause I’m so tall, I can usually do perfect slam dunks. Well that was until my arm got stuck in the net and broke. I was so bummed. My doctor told me I could not play basketball for at least six weeks and I needed surgery to fix my arm. Never having had surgery, I asked my family and friends what surgery is like. Nobody had an answer for me. No one I knew had ever had surgery before.
I was scared to go to the hospital but I had to get back to playing the sport I love. On the morning of my surgery day I didn’t know what to expect. No one told me that before surgery you can’t eat or drink anything. I didn’t know I had to wear special pajamas, have anesthesia, and that I would wake up feeling weird in a PACU or “wake up” room. I learned all these things as I went through them!
Afterwards it was clear to me that I NEEDED to tell people what happens before surgery.
Come with me as I travel to hospitals, doctor’s offices, new places far and near, sharing my story about surgery.
If you know of anyone in need of surgery or who has questions about surgery please spread the word about my new book, “Surgery Day!”
